The Garden of Patience — illustration 1

Sade wanted a garden. She had seen her grandmother's garden, full of tall green plants and bright flowers. "I want mine to look like that!" Sade said. Her grandmother smiled warmly. "Then let us begin. But remember, Sade — a garden does not grow in one day."

Sade dug small holes in the soft brown earth. Her dark fingers pushed seeds into each one. She covered them gently with soil and poured cool water from a clay pot. "There," she said, brushing off her hands. "Now I will wait." She sat down right next to the dirt and watched.

The next morning, Sade ran to the garden. Nothing! Just brown dirt. She watered it again. The morning after — still nothing. "Grandmother, it is not working!" Sade said, frowning hard. Her grandmother laughed softly. "The seeds are working very hard right now. You just cannot see it yet."

Sade did not give up, but she was not happy about it. Every day she watered the soil. Every day she checked and checked. She wanted to dig down and look at the seeds. "Do not," her grandmother said. "If you pull a seed up to check on it, you kill it. Trust."

On the seventh morning, Sade saw something amazing. A tiny green tip was poking through the brown soil! Then another! And another! Sade dropped to her knees. "Grandmother, come look!" Tiny green shoots stood up from the dark earth like little fingers reaching for the sun. Sade clapped her hands and danced.

Weeks passed. Sade watered every single day without missing once. She pulled out weeds that tried to crowd her plants. She learned which bugs were friends and which were not. She learned that too much water was just as bad as too little. The garden was teaching her balance.

One bright morning, a yellow flower opened on the tallest plant. Sade stared at it for a long time. She had put a tiny seed in the ground. She had been patient. She had done the work every day, even when nothing seemed to happen. And now — this beautiful thing.

Her grandmother stood beside her. "The best things grow slowly. If you rush, you break. If you quit, nothing happens. But if you show up every day and do the work — life rewards you." Sade nodded. Patience is not doing nothing. Patience is trusting while you work. That is Ma'at.
