Welcome back, my young Living Sun, to the Per Ankh,
Imagine, my child, the great River Nile, the lifeblood of our land. Deep beneath its shimmering surface, where the sunlight barely reaches, lies rich, dark mud. It is from this humble, unseen place that the most cherished flower of Kemet begins its life: the blue lotus, or Seshen. This tiny seed, no bigger than your thumbnail, holds within it the promise of incredible beauty. It does not choose where it is born, but it holds a powerful dream: to reach the light, to show its true splendor to the world.
Slowly, patiently, the Seshen seed awakens. It sends a delicate stem upwards, pushing through the thick, dark mud, through the cool, deep water. It does not rush; it does not complain. It simply grows, guided by an unseen force, always reaching, always striving for the warmth of Ra, our life-giving sun. This journey from darkness to light is a powerful lesson, reminding us that even from the most challenging beginnings, something truly magnificent can emerge if we have the patience and determination to grow.
As the sun begins to set, the beautiful blue lotus performs a wondrous dance. Its petals, soft as a baby's cheek, slowly close, pulling the flower back down beneath the water's surface, as if to sleep. But with the first golden rays of dawn, the Seshen rises again, its petals unfurling to greet the new day, fresh and pure, as if washed anew. Its sweet, delicate scent fills the morning air, a gift to all who pass by, a symbol of endless rebirth and purity, like the morning dew on a fresh leaf.
Our ancestors, wise observers of nature and the deepest truths, looked at the Seshen and saw a reflection of themselves, and of all humanity. "Look," they would say, "this flower, which graces our temples and inspires our poets, grows from the very bottom of the river, from the thickest mud." This teaches us that where you come from, your circumstances or challenges, do not determine what you can become. You, my child, like the lotus, carry within you the potential for immense beauty and strength, no matter what "mud" you might encounter.
This is a lesson in Care and Responsibility. Just as the lotus must care for its journey, pushing through the water, we too must care for our own growth. We have a responsibility to nurture our inner self, to learn, to be kind, and to choose actions that help us rise towards the light of Maat – truth, justice, and balance. It means taking care of our minds, our bodies, and our spirits, knowing that every choice helps us unfurl our own unique beauty, just like the lotus.
Think of the mud as your challenges – a difficult task, a misunderstanding with a friend, or a day when things just don't go right. The lotus teaches us not to be afraid of the mud, but to use it as a foundation. It provides the nutrients for growth! Instead of staying stuck, we use our inner strength, our Ka, to push through. We take responsibility for our reactions and our efforts, knowing that each push brings us closer to the surface, closer to our own blooming.
And just as the lotus shares its beauty and fragrance, we too have a responsibility to share our gifts with the world. When you choose kindness, when you share your knowledge, when you help someone who is struggling, you are like the lotus, spreading beauty and harmony. This is living by Maat – creating a world where everyone has a chance to rise and shine, where we care for each other's growth, ensuring balance and reciprocity for all.
This ancient Kemetic wisdom, recorded in the Mdw Ntr, the divine words, is not just about the lotus. It is a guide for your life. It reminds you that you are an African child, an heir to a civilization that understood the deepest secrets of nature and humanity. You have the power within you to overcome, to transform, and to bring forth light and beauty, just like the Seshen, proving that pure radiance can emerge from any beginning.
The Pert em Heru, in its sacred voice, invites you to become this transformative power. It says: "I am the pure lotus that comes forth from the light. I am the nose of Ra. I come forth from the lake." Imagine yourself saying these words, feeling the strength of the stem, the purity of the petals. You are declaring your connection to the divine principles of purity and rebirth, affirming that you too are a source of light and beauty, rising above all challenges.
Our neteru also cherished the lotus. Nefertem, the neter of perfume and the beautiful lotus, was often depicted wearing a lotus blossom upon his head, symbolizing purity, beauty, and the sweet fragrance of life. When you smell a beautiful flower, think of Nefertem, reminding us that life, when lived with Maat, can be as fragrant and delightful as the purest Seshen, a gift to all who experience it.
For thousands of seasons, our people have placed these beautiful Seshen flowers in our temples, in our homes, and upon our altars. Not just for their beauty, but as a reminder of their profound teaching: that even from the deepest, darkest mud, the most stunning purity and life can emerge. It is a symbol of hope, of rebirth, and of the unwavering potential within each of us to rise, transform, and bring forth light, embracing our responsibility to shine.
Seba Khafre's eyes twinkled. "So, my young Living Sun," he concluded, "like the Seshen, you are born with a purpose to bloom. Take care of your spirit, your thoughts, your actions – these are the waters you grow in. Be responsible for pushing through any 'mud' that comes your way. Remember your ancestors, who saw the truth in a flower and taught us that our origins are not our destiny. Our destiny is to rise, pure and fragrant, and share our light with the world."
