My Heart Belongs to Me — illustration 1

Welcome back, {name}! The warm light of the Per Ankh falls softly on our ancient papyrus scrolls, just as the neter Ra brings light to Kemet each dawn. We have learned much from the wisdom of our ancestors — about Ra’s journey, Ausar’s justice, knowing your powerful Ren, and the sacredness of words. Today, we journey to a place deep within ourselves, a place where all your thoughts, your kindnesses, and your brave moments are kept safe. This is the chamber of your Ib, your heart, the very core of who you are.

Our ancestors, wise masters of Kemet, believed your Ib was much more than just a muscle that beats in your chest. They saw it as the true center of your being, the sacred scroll where every choice you ever made was written down. Every kind word you spoke, every helping hand you offered, every moment of bravery, and even every little untruth – all were recorded within your Ib. This precious Ib was considered the truest part of you, the place where your soul's wisdom resided, guiding your Ka and Ba on their eternal journey.

To protect this sacred record, our ancestors often placed a special scarab amulet, carved from dark stone, right over the chest. This humble beetle, which majestically rolls the sun across the sky each dawn, symbolized rebirth, new beginnings, and protection. It was a powerful reminder that your heart was sacred, a guardian against anything that might try to silence its truth or make its record heavy with deceit. This protection was vital for the spirit's transformative journey through the Duat, the hidden world beneath the earth.

Imagine, {name}, standing in a vast, bright hall, filled with the neteru, the divine principles that guide our world. This is the Hall of Maat, where truth and justice shine brightest, like the purest gold. Here, two great neteru stand by the exquisite golden scales: Anpu, the wise guardian of pathways, with his noble jackal head, and Djehuti, the great scribe, with his elegant ibis head, ready to record all that is true. This moment is the ultimate test of character, not of power.

On one side of the perfectly balanced scales, lighter than a feather and purer than morning dew, floats the Feather of Maat itself, sparkling with divine light. On the other side, your own Ib, your heart, would be gently placed. This wasn't a punishment, but a sacred moment of ultimate honesty with yourself. Your heart, knowing everything you've ever done or said, every secret thought and every open action, would be asked to testify to your life's choices. It was a moment of profound self-reflection.

Our ancestors understood that you cannot truly hide anything from your own heart. It remembers every secret, every kind act, every brave decision, and yes, every time you might have stretched the truth or spoken an unkind word. This Ib knew if you lived by Maat – with truth, balance, and justice in your everyday life. It was not about what others saw, or what you said with your mouth, but what your own heart knew to be true, deep within its chamber of wisdom.

And so, in the Pert em Heru, the sacred words declare a powerful request to the heart, a plea whispered with deepest sincerity: 'O my Ib of my mother! O my Ib of my being! Do not stand up against me as a witness! Do not be adverse to me in the presence of the great neteru of the Hall of Truth!' This wasn't a plea of fear, but a deep desire to have lived a life so honest and pure that your heart would proudly speak for you, not against you. It's a wish for your heart to be a friend, not an accuser.

Some people, who did not fully understand our ways, called these 'negative confessions.' But your African ancestors, the builders of Kemet, knew better! These were not confessions of guilt, but powerful affirmations of right living. Each statement – 'I have not stolen,' 'I have not told lies,' 'I have not hurt others' – was a commitment to Maat, a declaration of a life lived with integrity and respect for all beings. It was a promise to oneself and to the universe, spoken with Heka, creative power.

When your heart's record was pure, light with truth and goodness, it would balance perfectly with the Feather of Maat on the scales. This meant you had lived a life of Ankh, true living, aligning your actions with the harmony and righteous order of Kemet. Your heart, knowing its own truth, would remain silent, or even better, would sing praises for your honest life. It was the ultimate testament to a life well-lived, a journey completed with honor and integrity, free from Isfet, chaos.

Seba says: 'These words carry Heka — speak them and FEEL their power, {name}.'

O my Ib of my mother! O my Ib of my being! Do not stand up against me as a witness! Do not be adverse to me in the presence of the great neteru of the Hall of Truth! This is the Mdw Ntr, the divine speech of your ancestors. When your Ib balanced the feather, you were declared Akh – a radiant, wise ancestor, one with the divine light of Ra. This meant your journey was complete, your truth was revealed, and you would continue to be a guiding star for those who followed. It was the ultimate reward for a life lived with honesty and purpose in Kemet.

This profound wisdom teaches us that true freedom comes from living a life where your heart has nothing to hide. It is the freedom of being truly yourself, of speaking your truth, and of acting with integrity in every moment. Imagine the deep peace of knowing your Ib would always speak well of you, always affirming your goodness. That is the power of Maat – to live so purely that your heart is always your ally, always light, always in harmony with the great order of the cosmos.

Seba nods: 'You have spoken the words of your ancestors. That is Heka — the power of truth.' So, {name}, every time you choose to be honest, every time you choose kindness, every time you bravely tell the truth even when it's hard, you are making your Ib light. Think about how you want your heart to speak about you. Let it be a song of joy and truth, reflecting the Maat in your spirit. This precious wisdom from your African ancestors is a map for living a full, honest life, right here, right now, with an Ankh that shines brightly for all to see.
